The REAL [business] Cost of Too Many Tools

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

More than once, I have been frustrated in discussions with organizations where there arein my opiniontoo many tools. If you have ever begged for a particular tool or application, this may seem like a good problem to have.

As we all know, to make anything change, you have to find a way to "make the business care," and that is usually aided by quantifying the cost. Businesses are made up of human beings though, so to drill in on the particular environment or organization can put your stakeholders on the defensive quickly. After a recent conversation, I was prompted to research the issue generically, on average, to see if there was any quantifiable data available. (Of course, there was....)

While this in no way addresses the cost related to security, privacy risk, regulatory compliance, sheer volume of administrative time, etc., the output was this infographic with the collected data. Depending upon your target audience, when needing a non-judgmental approach to starting the conversation, this particular angle worked well for me.
