Smugnorance

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

Someone said this word to me in a passing conversation and I was like, "OMG, YES!" Perfect, perfect summation of what I was experiencing at the time.

"smug" + "ignorance" = "smugnorance"

This is a bit cross-gender in its applicability. This is when someone is not only ignorant on a subject --not stupid, IGNORANT --but also smug in that fact, as if not only are you less informed but should be humored or condescended to because of your lack of knowledge.

I tend to think that people who display this behavior are generally on borrowed time with me anyway, as I truly do love to learn, so:

  1. The chances of me being wrong and the other person being right in these cases is extremely slim --all ego aside.

  2. I don't tolerate this attitude in coworkers --or anyone really --and certainly not on my teams, as there is always something to learn.
