If you aren't replaceable, you aren't promotable.

Updated: Aug 25, 2022

I am sure that we have all worked with that one person who hoarded all of the keys and the passwords and the knowledge of systems. The joke there was always that this person had "job security."

While that may be true, if no one else can do your job, that also means that for the foreseeable future, YOU will be doing that job. Sound interesting to you? It sounds like Hell to me!

Aside from the fact that I, for one, do not want to retain a job because the people that I work for/with are scared.... You also won't be able to take vacation, or turn off your phone, or basically have a life of any kind outside of the office. –And that may be your end goal.

HOWEVER, what is not always also seen is that "If you aren't replaceable, you aren't promotable."

Doing a great job and want acknowledgment? You may get a pat on the back, but you won't be given new responsibilities, title, or increased salary. After all, who will do this work of which you are the only person capable?
