If something feels like a waste...

Updated: Aug 25, 2022

If something feels like a waste of time or pointless, you're probably doing it wrong.

It is just that simple.

I have seen it most frequently around Agile or Scrum ceremonies. A team will say that they do not see the point in a daily stand-up, and they will stop having them. Or they will stop having retrospectives, or planning and/or refining the backlog as a group. They may decide that tasking stories as a team is of no value.

The [usually unpopular] fact is that the meeting or ceremony itself SHOULD have value. If it does not, the team needs coaching and remediation to find what element of the gathering is missing that would create that value. You are doing it "wrong."
